Introduction to Ergonomics presents the the discipline of ergonomics from both a conceptual and managerial viewpoint. Students are introduced to the definition and general “idea” of ergonomics, the origin and history of the discipline and why the topic is important to engineers. The differences between safety and ergonomics are discussed and the interdisciplinary nature  of ergonomics is presented. Typical workplace applications of ergonomics principles are illustrated.  Obstacles that impede the implementation of ergonomics are noted  and the economic impact and benefits of ergonomics are also discussed.

Participants can expect to:

1. Acquire a broad understanding of the discipline of ergonomics
2. Learn why ergonomics is important to engineers
3. Appreciate how ergonomics is different from yet complimentary to traditional occupational safety
4. Gain an appreciation of typical workplace hazards that are addressed by ergonomics
5. Learn of situations that impede implementation of ergonomics
