Course Number: V12G_23

Design fundamentals for structural steel members using the American Institute of Steel Construction’s Specification for Structural Steel Buildings (2010) and Steel Construction Manual, 14th Ed. (2011) are covered.  This course is a significant revision of an earlier course of the same name.  The new course emphasizes a limit states view of the design process.  Explanations of the common failure modes, or limit states, and design requirements are the focus of the course.  Analysis and design examples are used to illustrate the concepts.  A fundamental background in structural analysis and design is assumed.  This course is excellent for engineers seeking a review of the basic principles of steel design and for experienced structural designers who have not started using this latest version of the 2010 version of the Specification in daily practice.  Specific topics covered include the design of tension members, gusset plates, bolted and welded connections in shear, flexural members, compression members, and beam columns.
