Course Number: V15S_23

The presented design procedure follows the AASHTO LRFD Code.  The provisions are presented for composite steel girder bridges.  The design is demonstrated on an example.  The design provisions are also presented for prestressed concrete girder bridges.  The design is demonstrated on an example.   The design of shear connectors for composite girders is also presented and demonstrated on two examples, a steel girder and a prestressed concrete girder.

Design of Steel and P/C Girders is the third of four courses in the Bridge Design and Evaluation series.  The series objective is to present the approach to design and evaluation of highway bridges.   The design is based on the AASHTO LRFD Code and evaluation on the AASHTO Manual for Condition Evaluation of Bridges.  The presentation includes the design philosophy, procedures and practical examples.

Audience:

This series is addressed to engineers interested in bridge engineering.  In particular, those interested in application of the new LRFD code that is based in limit states.  A basic knowledge of design of reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete and steel structures is needed.  It is recommended that the courses are taken in order:
