Bicycle and Pedestrian Facilities

This course provides an overview of bicycle and pedestrian facilities.  This course can serve as a refresher or update on key planning, safety, and design issues pertaining to human-powered transportation modes for the practicing transportation engineer and planner.

The material is divided into three basic topics: an overview of safety, mode usage, and evolution of federal policies, basic design concepts and considerations for pedestrians, and basic design concepts and considerations for bicyclists. Key learning objectives include:

• Describe the evolution of federal policies pertaining to bicycle and pedestrian facilities
• Identify key safety and usage trends
• Discuss and interpret guidance on basic pedestrian design elements, including intersections and midblock crossings
• Provide an overview of accessibility concepts and regulations
• Discuss and interpret guidance on basic bicycle design elements
• Identify and select appropriate types of bicycle facilities

This course should be of interest to city and county engineers, consulting transportation engineers, land use and transportation planners, and other professionals whose role includes planning, designing, and operating the surface transportation infrastructure.
