Aggregate Properties and Testing

The objective of this course is to develop an understanding of the Superpave test procedures, specifications, and consensus properties for aggregates used in production of asphalt mixtures. Generic test procedures for acceptance of aggregates will be demonstrated. The following test procedures will be covered: sampling aggregates; materials finer than No. 200 (0.075 mm) sieve; unit weight and voids in aggregate; sieve analysis in fine and coarse aggregates; reducing field samples of aggregate to testing size; method for determining flat and elongated pieces in coarse aggregate, Los Angeles abrasion, soundness loss as well as specific tests related to friction and polishing properties.
